•Accurate modeling of instabilities requires resolving the critical wavelength.•An adaptive multiscale algorithm is used to accurately model the instability onset.•Large-scale and later-time accuracy is greatly improved.•The adaptive algorithm is flexible and effective to describe finger statistics.•If required, some regions can be refined during the entire simulation.
