•Evidence is presented for financial incentive of resource recovery from faecal sludge.•Possibilities include fuel, protein, building materials and soil conditioner.•Soil amendments potentially do not generate as much revenue as energy production.•Local solutions need to be determined, as demands vary significantly among locations.•Investment in at-scale research is required to demonstrate and replicate this potential.
