•Recycling glass uses 3.3 MJ/kg less energy than landfilling, reduces emissions by 0.39 kg CO2e/kg.•Recycling C&D rubble not always preferable to landfilling, with dependency on transport distance.•Recycling glass avoids 25 times more GHG emissions than recycling C&D rubble.•LCA can inform decisions on recycling activities where waste management resources are limited.•Adherence to waste management hierarchy will not always result in the best environmental outcome.
