Diverse local regulatory responses to a new forestry regime in forest communities in the Bolivian Amazon

•We studied how CPR governance regimes adapt under land and forest property rights reforms and decentralization.•In the northern Bolivian Amazon communities adapted local rules and implemented communal property rights after regulatory reforms.•Local variations in responses are observed that are related to differences in local cultural institutional histories.•Local institutional self-organization can and should be taken into account when forest regulatory reforms are considered.
