•Benthic habitat mapping classification approaches were compared at two study sites.•Both approaches generated habitat classes containing distinct biological assemblages.•Both approaches established strong and significant biotic–abiotic relationships.•Both approaches are suitable for mapping and classifying benthic habitats.•For future projects, approach should be chosen based on project needs and resources.
