•Biomass residue and biowaste from agriculture represent an important feedstock in bioeconomy.•A reliable estimate of the biomass, biowaste and agro-residues is necessary to define policies for their valorization.•There exist a huge gap in the agricultural field residues generation and its valorization in India.•The future expected improvement in crop yields will lead to several fold increase in residue generation.
