The reactions of 1,4-diazabutadienes
with HClO
4 were studied in detail. The final products obtained were not the hydroperchlorates of
but imidazolium perchlorates
or
. A possible reaction process is postulated on the basis of the isolation of the
pan class="TH_term4">intermediatepan> 2-iminomethylimidazolium salt
. The factors influencing the conversion of
to the imidazolium perchlorates
and
were discussed with regard to the electronic and steric effects of the
N-substituents. This reaction can serve as an approach for the synthesis of imidazolium derivatives.
