The possible mechanism of the title synthesis involves not only the formation of 2H-azirine from the thermolysis of vinyl azide and vinylogous carbanion from dicyanoalkene, but also an intramolecular nucleophilic attack between the nitrogen of the aziridine and a cyano group followed by cyclization, ring-opening, and intramolecular rearrangement.
