Efficient C(sp²)-H bond arylation has been achieved in water by using arene–ruthenium(II) catalysts containing nitrogen-based ligands. The substitution on the ligands proved to be an important tool to tune the activity of these catalysts. Mass spectrometrical analysis and ¹H NMR spectroscopy were used for the identification of reactive intermediates and to gain more insights into the reaction pathway.
