Balance is everything: Two new non-centrosymmetric polar quaternary selenides, AZn4In5Se12 (A = Rb, Cs), which adopt a 3D diamond-like framework (DLF) consisting of MSe4 (M = Zn/In) tetrahedra have been synthesized. These exhibit a good balance between strong second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency (4×AgGaS2) and high laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs) (13×AgGaS2). Upon analyzing their structure–property relationship, these DLF structures represent an unprecedented opportunity for the rational design and development of good IR nonlinear optical (NLO) materials.
