Activity and stability of monometallic and bimetallic catalysts for high-temperature catalytic HI decomposition in the iodine-sulfur hydrogen production cycle

Carbon supported Pd, Pt, Ir, Pd–Pt, Pd–Ir, and Pt–Ir catalysts were prepared.

Their catalytic activities were compared for HI decomposition at 550–600 °C.

The fresh and used catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, EDX and XPS.

Obvious differences were found between fresh and used Pd-containing catalysts.

Synergy between Pt and Ir strongly improves catalyst activity and stability.
