AhR-mediated activity and contributing chemicals were assessed in total and bioavailable fractions of sediment.

AhR-active chemical burdens occurred ubiquitously with a clear spatial pattern linked to sources.

Targeted PAHs explained < 40% of AhR-mediated activity, which was dominated by labile ligands.

Quantitative relationships were verified for both exposure and effect in the sediment-PDMS-biota system.
