A superamphiphilic diatomite coated mesh was successfully fabricated via a spray-coating process.

The mode of oil/water separation was reversibly switched between the oil-removing and the water-removing on the coated mesh.

The as-prepared coated mesh can separate oils from harsh conditions.

The methyl blue adsorption performance was demonstrated, showing excellent adsorption capacity for water remediation.
