Al coagulation alone could remove EOM by 18% (DOC) at a low dosage of 0.4 mg Al mg−1 DOC.
Improved organic removal was achieved by coagulation with the aid of KMnO4 or MnO2.
The enhanced Al coagulation exhibited preferential removal of high-MW components of EOM.
Membrane permeability and fouling reversibility were improved by enhanced Al coagulation.
EOM fouling was governed by multiple mechanisms dominated by standard blocking.
