An in vitro assay to test anticoccidial drug efficacy in E. tenella is proposed. Different assay setups were compared to widely used animal experiments. Reproduction inhibition assay reproducibly indicated ionophore resistant strains. The assay could be useful for future efficacy screening in polyether ionophores. For toltrazuril, the presented assay is not suitable to replace animal experiments.
