Groundwater observation wells (n = 3907) are used to compute spatial variability. First study of spatial variability of groundwater storage affected by well spacing. Spatial variability of groundwater storage increases with increasing spatial extent. The output could be used to design cost-effective groundwater monitoring network. Log-linear relationship exists between groundwater spatial variability and extent.
