Milk consumption has sharply declined in the last decades. Of responders from the Campania population, 22.2% do not drink fluid milk. Of the same population, 18.1% drink lactose-free milk, mainly because of gastrointestinal symptoms. Females and underweight individuals drink more lactose-free milk than milk containing lactose. There is a need for mandatory implementation of a nutritional campaign to stop unnecessary avoidance of fluid milk and excessive consumption of cheese.
