Lack of CD36 expression has no effect on macrophage ABCA1 expression at basal levels. PPARγ inhibits macrophage ABCA1 expression and cholesterol efflux to apoAI. Deficiency of CD36 expression has no effect on PPARγ-regulated ABCA1 expression. Activation of PPARγ induces macrophage ABCG1 expression and cholesterol efflux to HDL. Inhibition of foam cells formation by PPARγ is not contributed by ABCA1 expression.
