Adding CO2 to a hypoxic gas mixture did not modify maximal exercise performance. This induced higher ventilation levels at rest, and to a lesser degree at exercise. This translated in higher arterial O2 content at rest, but not at end-exercise. For a given VO2 level, this modified neither cardiac output nor O2 extraction.
