MAR addition was an effective method to mitigate fouling. MAR mitigated the formation of gel and cake layers. Sludge activity was inhibited, which consequently decreased sludge production. COD removal in the supernatant was reinforced by MAR adsorption. Fouled MAR could be cleaned to achieve regeneration.
