Solutions to the unsteady 1D diffusion equations of ternary mixtures show unstable fluid layers. A criterion for the onset of convection in these layers is proposed. The criterion based on linear stability analysis agree with full 3D numerical simulations. Numerical simulations show, under certain conditions, intense natural convection flows. The effect of these flows may be important in diffusion experiments.
