Poly(ethylene imine) grafted lignin composite with functionality was newly designed. The product had a porous structure with abundant functional groups. It showed fast adsorption for Cu(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) in water during 20 min. The adsorption capacity followed a sequence of Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Ni(II). It had a reliable reusability within 5 cycles.
