Crude oil is buried in Louisiana coastal marshes from the BP oil spill. Soil denitrification is suppressed after exposure to 5 yr old oil from BP spill. Nitrate reduction increased with the presence of a buried oil layer in wetland soil. If oil remains buried, there is little impact to soil not in contact with oil.
