Salt templating was used to generate hierarchical CTF-1 materials. A modified temperature protocol lead to CTF-1 materials combining very high pore volumes and a high nitrogen content. The solubility of organic species in the respective salt melt turned out to be crucial for the generation of porous CTFs.
