Linear chains of Ag nanoparticles were deposited on the ferroelectric domain boundaries of an Yb3+-Er3+:LiNbO3 crystal. The Yb3+ → Er3+ energy transfer up-converted emission is enhanced about 50% in the proximities of the metallic chains. The enhancement of the NIR excitation was found to be the dominant mechanism for the intensified up-converted luminescence.
