The Miocene sedimentary sequence of Porto Torres, Sardinia, is rich in spatangoids. Functional morphology of echinoids, taphonomy and sedimentology were investigated. An outer sublittoral environment with low energy affected by storms has been inferred. Different burrowing depths and resource partitioning among deposit-feeders occurred. Factors influencing the preservation potential of spatangoid echinoids were discussed.
