Palaeocurrents indicate sources varying from the NE to SW since the Late Cretaceous. This trend is confirmed by detrital zircon age populations. The SE provenance during the Lutetian is identified as a NE extension of the Antarctic Peninsula. The directional change coincided with uplift of the Southern Patagonian Andes. Fossil leaves confirm the creation of a rain shadow E of the Andes at ~ 34 Ma.
