Here we report a single well using composite filtration material comprised with siderite and sands for in situ treatment of groundwater with high arsenic concentrations. The single well was designed to be low cost and required minimal maintenance, which makes it suitable for rural areas. Shanyin County, a rural area in Shanxi province, north China, where groundwater contains the highest arsenic concentration in China, was selected as the field site for evaluating the effectiveness of the single well. The pilot run obtained a better effect, the average concentration of effluent after treatment was 247.57 μg/L, and the rates of arsenic removal were 52%∼65%. The mechanisms for arsenic removal are likely that the hydroxyl of Fe(OH)x/FeOOH which contributed from the hydrolysis of FeCO3, is substituted by aqueous arsenic.
