Unspiked K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar is applied to the dating of recent MORBs. Direct comparison of the isotopic and model ages validates only 9 out of 26 age determinations. The unspiked K-Ar technique has a low rate of success when applied to submerged volcanic samples. Some samples may show excess 40Ar* and suffered alteration and recoil. Five MORBS out of seven are successfully dated via 40Ar/39Ar step-heating experiments.
