Five Turkish lignites were gasified in a pilot scale (6 t/d) entrained flow gasifier. Gas compositions, start-up and operation procedures with operational problems, were given as reference for further studies. The maximum lower heating values of syngases were between 6.6 MJ/Nm3&ndash;10.5 MJ/Nm3. The cold gas efficiencies were between 41%&ndash;72%. Lignite type coal (moisture < 15%, ash amount < 10%) could be gasified without any significant problem.
