Simple coupled sea ice – ocean model that simulates the seasonal cycle of sea ice formation is presented. Salt and sea ice production in Terra Nova Bay polynya is calculated. Model-derived polynya extent is compared to MODIS IST images. Atmospheric in situ data combined with ECMWF reanalysis reproduce in good detail the wind forcing and the polynya opening.
