We have synthesized a series of Ce3+- and Ce3+/Tb3+-activated Ca10(PO4)6S phosphors by solid state reaction method. The effect of Ce3+ concentration on the emission intensity of Ca10(PO4)6S:Ce3+ is studied, and the emission intensity reaches a maximum at 6% Ce3+. The energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions is observed. The emission spectra of the Ca10(PO4)6S:Ce3+,Tb3+ phosphors show the blue broad band at 410 nm and the green line peaking at 550 nm, originating from the Ce3+and Tb3+ ions, respectively. The results indicate that the emission color varied from blue to green can be achieved by tuning the Ce3+/Tb3+ ratio based on the principle of energy transfer. In addition, the mechanism of the energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions is of dipole-quadrupole type, as demonstrated by the Inokuti–Hirayama (I–H) model. The critical distance between the ions calculated by concentration quenching (10.39 Å) and spectral overlap methods (11.56 Å) are consistent, which testifies the energy transfer mechanism type.
