Three new terpyridine-based Zn2+ complexes were synthesized facilely. Both turn-on and ratiometric fluorescent probes have been developed for the detection of PPi. PPi-induced emissive nanoparticles were clearly observed. All probes have been utilized in visualizing whole cells including nucleus staining.
