Cerebral oxygenation fluctuates considerably during cardiac surgery. Cerebral hyperoxia after hypoxia was strongly associated with delirium. Hyperoxia independent of hypoxia was also associated with postoperative delirium. Hypoxia was not associated with delirium. Intraoperative oxidative injury may partially mediate these effects.
