Mono- and binuclear Zn(II)/Cd(II) pyridine-4-aldoxime and pyridine-4-amidoxime complexes, [Zn(CH3COO)2(4-pyao)2] (1), [Zn(CH3COO)2(4-pyamo)2] (2), [Cd2(CH3COO)4(4-pyao)4]·4H2O (3), [Cd2(CH3COO)4(4-pyamo)4]·2DMF (4) and [Cd(CH3COO)2(4-pyao)3]·3H2O (5) (4-pyao = pyridine-4-aldoxime; 4-pyamo = pyridine-4-amidoxime), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray structure determination. The mononuclear compounds 1 and 2 contain two, while compound 5 contains three neutral pyridine-4-aldoxime ligands coordinated to the metal center through the Npyridyl atom. The acetate anions coordinate in monodentate (1, 2), bidentate (3–5) and bidentate-bridging (3, 4) modes. Compounds 2, 3 and 5 display blue luminescence upon excitation with ultraviolet light.
