Advanced glycation end products interfere with gastric smooth muscle contractile marker expression via the AGE/RAGE/NF-κB pathway

We investigated AGEs involvement in diabetes-associated gastric dysmotility. STZ-induced diabetic rats had decreased SM MHC, α-actin, calponin gene expression. AGEs downregulated myocardin expression and activated NF-κB and RAGE. NF-κB inhibitor and anti-RAGE antibody blocked the effects of AGEs. Downregulated SM contractile protein and myocardin may induce gastric dysmotility.
