Effect of water depth on weld quality and welding process in underwater fiber laser welding

The effect of water depth on underwater fiber laser welding were investigated without draining the welding zone. The formation of ‘beam channel’ is the key to realize the direct underwater laser beam welding. ‘Beam channel’ is formed as a result of gas pressure inside plasma exceed water pressure depending on water depth. Stability of ‘beam channel’, which gradually worsens with increasing water depth, have an terrible influence on underwater laser welding.
