We were first to probe anisotropy of human cartilage at large shear strains of 5–25%. We used tissue from patellofemoral grooves (PFG) and lateral femoral condyles (LC). We applied large shears parallel and perpendicular to local split-line direction (SLD). PFG was stiffer and dissipated more energy parallel to the SLD at all applied strains. LC was mechanically anisotropic only under larger strains of 20% and 25%.
