DTI can noninvasively and quantitatively detect damage in the optic tracts of neonatal monocular blind macaque monkeys. The damage included the integrity destruction of white matter tracts and axonal degeneration and demyelination. The damage was gradual and irreversible process, and the degree of degeneration between the left and right optic tracts was not synchronized over time.
