Rise of continents occurred at a specific time in the evolution of cratons. Cause: detachment of dense roots postulated to have underlain Archean continents. Detachment triggered by plumes, which produced extensive basaltic volcanism a priori. Volcanism followed by widespread crustal melting, uplift and sedimentation. Rise of continents was an essential precursor to the rise in free oxygen.
