Simultaneous light emission and detection of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well diodes for in-plane visible light communication

Suspended MQWDs are used as transmitters and receivers simultaneously, and suspended waveguides are used for light coupling to create an in-plane visible light communication system. Both the p-GaN and InGaN/GaN MQW layers on top of the waveguides are removed to generate continuous waveguide architecture, leading to an improved light efficiency from 18% to 22%. The MQWDs can achieve simultaneous light emission and photodetection when the devices operate either under emitter mode or detector mode. When the in-plane VLC system operates in full-duplex mode, the superposition behavior occurs when both transmitted and received signals happen at the same time and at the same frequency.
