Paleoclimate time-series properties make them vulnerable to spurious correlations. Serial correlation and age uncertainties are omnipresent. In correlations with a climate field, the false discovery rate needs to be controlled. We highlight methods to safeguard against spurious correlations. Failure to apply such precautions can have a first-order impact on the interpretation.
