The global spatial lifecycle of the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry is analyzed. Our data partly contradicts existing industry lifecycle theories. Latecomers in China started manufacturing and deployment earlier than expected. Pioneers in the US and EU retained significant first-mover advantages in patenting. Industry lifecycle theory needs updates in the production and market dimensions.
