Bicrystalline ZnS microbelts with unusual structures were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition while adding MnO2 into standard ZnS precursor. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron diffraction (ED) analyses showed that two neighboring crystals within each bicrystal are composed of (02)/(103) and (010)/(103) planes with only one atomic layer of the (103) plane at the twin boundary, different from all previously reported ZnS twinned structures. UV sensors prepared from novel ZnS microbelts exhibited an ultrafast response and a decent stability under continuous UV irradiation, revealing a large promise for applications in nanoscaled UV-sensors.
