An Unconventional Role of Ligand in Continuously Tuning of Metal鈥揗etal Interfacial Strain

We show that embedding of a surface ligand can dramatically affect the metal鈥搈etal interfacial energy, making it possible to create nanostructures in defiance of traditional wisdom. Despite matching Au鈥揂g lattices, Au鈥揂g hybrid NPs can be continuously tuned from concentric core鈥搒hell, eccentric core鈥搒hell, acorn, to dimer structures. This method can be extended to tune even Au鈥揂u and Ag鈥揂g interfaces.
