The quantification of the application potential of different transport technologies in German quarries is topic of a research project at the RWTH Aachen University. In the course of this project an in-depth analysis of the respective applications took place. This paper presents the general structure of mining operations for aggregates in Germany. Various parameters of open pit mines such as conveying tonnage, claimed open pit mine areas and the rock type are presented together with the mining methods and the equipment applied for the different process steps. In this context, approximately 450 quarries were analyzed, using different assessment methods, and the collected data were evaluated. It becomes obvious that the investigated operating conditions are very different. Nevertheless, the same production technology is used throughout the industry.
