Strong luminescence enhancement of Li doped Y2O3:5 %Eu3+ phosphors

Y2O3:5 %Eu3+, x %Li+(x = 0, 2, 5, 8, and 10) phosphor have been synthesized by the sol–gel method. The microstructure and luminescent properties were also investigated for all samples by X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic morphology, and photoluminescence measurement. The Li addition is beneficial to the enhancement of luminescent intensity, and the optimal Li content is 8 % for Y2O3:5 %Eu3+. The enhancement could be attributed to three factors: one is the lattice shrinking due to smaller Li ionic radius, secondly, the appearance of the oxygen vacancies, and thirdly, the reducing number of OH− group by doping with Li+ ions.
