Since the early 1990s, tourism has been developed quickly in some well-preserved Chinese water towns. Tourism benefits these small towns economically. However, environmental problems and social problems have already appeared in these water towns. Serious academic research on tourism development in these communities is deficient. This research partially fills this gap by examining tourism impacts through a case study of Zhu Jia Jiao, a typical Chinese water town. Tourism impacts are explored by assessing the development stage of Zhu Jia Jiao, according to Mitchell's (1998a) creative destruction model.;Given the exploratory nature of the research, a variety of methods was employed in this study, including on-site observation, literature reviews, semi-structured interviews, residents' questionnaire survey and qualitative content analysis of travelogues from online travel communities.;The results of the study reflect that tourism development is having profound impacts on Zhu Jia Jiao economically, socially, and environmentally. Consequently, both the tourists and local residents have perceived a partial destruction of the rural idyll in Zhu Jia Jiao. Despite the negative impacts of tourism, as perceived by some local residents, most of the local residents confirm the positive impacts that tourism has brought to the town. Therefore, as various indicators suggest, Zhu Jia Jiao is currently at the "advanced commodification" stage of Mitchell's creative destruction model (1998a). A variety of recommendations is made to address the problems found through this study. Results and recommendations could improve the tourism planning and management processes in Zhu Jia Jiao and other similar communities.
