Globally, intimate partner violence (IPV) is a very serious and significant health concern. Many researchers have attempted to postulate on the variables that may be the source of intimate partner violence, with one area of focus being attitudes towards women. This study aimed to examine the IPV-related attitudes and beliefs among Afghan women, 18 years and older, living in Sacramento and the Bay Area. It was hypothesized that age, gender traditionalism, and levels of acculturation in women would be related to attitudes towards intimate partner violence. This study demonstrated how these factors may be related to positive attitudes towards intimate partner violence through the Revised Attitudes Toward Wife Abuse Scale, the Attitude Toward Women Scale, the Vancouver Index of Acculturation, and the Demographic and Health Questionnaire. Findings concluded that age is positively correlated to acceptance of IPV and that traditional attitudes towards the roles of women are related to a higher acceptance of IPV among Afghan American women. Acculturation was not significantly correlated with a high acceptance of IPV. This study adds to the very limited information available on IPV among Afghan American women. It is hoped that learning more about factors associated with IPV-related attitudes may ultimately lead to development of preventative measures and culturally sensitive interventions for this population.
