Since the 1980s, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have been highly publicized in both health related and entertainment publications (i.e. World Health Organization, American Psychological Association Scientific Journals, and Entertainment Weekly). Unfortunately, most of the discussions related to HIV and AIDS are in regard to the way in which one becomes infected with the virus and the stigmata's attached to the route of infection. One setting where HIV/AIDS appears to currently be the most problematic is inside a correctional facility. Research shows that roughly 20% to 25% of all HIV-positive individuals in the United States become incarcerated each year (Scheyett, Parker, Golin, White, Davis, & Wohl, 2010). The purpose of this study is to shed light on the lack of medical and mental health care given to the HIV-positive incarcerated population. A quantitative study was used to test the hypotheses that HIV-positive inmates have higher rates of depression and suicide attempts than HIV-uninfected inmates, that these inmates are being diagnosed at higher rates with depression, and being treated at higher rates for depression than HIV uninfected inmates. This information was collected and analyzed utilizing the database at a large urban jail in Southern California. The data that has been analyzed was collected over a 12-year period from inmates during the intake process but who have since been released. The analysis compared the incidents of diagnosed depression of HIV-positive inmates and those who were not HIV-positive at the time of incarceration. Although the results did not suggest any significance for the hypotheses, HIV-positive inmates were identified as having a greater rate of receiving mental health care than non HIV-positive inmates.
